The Doula Village MKE was founded by Mia Morse and Shantell Riley. They saw a big gap of support provided to doulas who served clients in Milwaukee. The doulas give their all to influence birth outcomes in a community that has high infant mortality rates. They wanted to make sure that someone was "doulaing the doula". Mia, mommy of two amazing kids, doula, and massage therapist knows first-hand what was required to provide care for clients who had limited access to resources and inequities of treatment with the healthcare system. Shantell, a mom to 3 sons (1 deceased), grandmother to 1 grandson, end-of-life doula, registered nurse, registered yoga teacher, and certified grief counselor serves the same population after they experienced a pregnancy or infant loss. Driven by a common passion to serve those who serve wholeheartedly was how The Doula Village MKE was born.
The Haven is a sacred space free for birth workers of color. A space to restore the birth workers who wholeheartedly provide for their clients.
The Doula Survival Bags are provided free to birth workers who are actively supporting a pregnant person through a birth.
To build our doula village, we wanted to extend beyond the doulas, we wanted to include the families of doulas as well. Hosting "Doula Village Family Gatherings" to create bonding opportunities for all the families. Making sure that family time is being nurtured.
